How to help kids build resilience

What is resilience?

Children love to sort out their own problems? Step out of the way, parents 🤗

From the age of 1, they want to have a go at anything their little hearts are set on. As a Mum of 2 with another bub soon due to join us, I remind myself often – any behavioral challenge can be overcome if we parents give our kids more responsibility, a greater way to contribute, a sense of purpose. Especially in those little bite-size moments, which we could so easily regard as insignificant and make a snap decision to fix ourselves. Especially in THOSE moments.

Making pancakes for breakfast this morning, the gas ran out, but with the big man of the house not home to replace the gas, the kids and I had a challenge to solve. Mr 8 said, “AHA! we’ll cook them outside!” Off we went – Mr 8 chopped wood, I lit the outside fireplace, Mr 5 stuffed it with the fast-burning kindle, and we had that delicious campfire smell to accompany tasty pancakes with fresh strawberry jam.

This to me is the definition of resilience.

I’ve heard that bullying in preschools and schools helps kids develop resilience. To me: no, that’s just a lack of kindness and support for peers.

What is resilience?

RESILIENCE is setting a goal and coming up with alternatives if necessary. If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.

We WANT our kids to ask, if I want to eat something, what can I do to make it happen?
